Head Chef

What are they? A head chef, or also knows as head cook, is a professional cook who is proficient in all aspects of cuisine. They are in charge of watching over the operations of a restaurant.

Location: Head cooks work in restaurant, private households, hotels, and any other place where food is served.

Education: The lowest level of education a head chef can receive in order to enter this field is a high school diploma. But, the majority of people pursuing this career attend programs in community college, culinary art schools, and 4 year colleges. Once they have begun their journey, they start off their career as line cooks or food preparation workers.

Tasks: The duties of a head chef include:

  • checking the freshness of ingredients
  • supervising and coordinating activities for employees
  • developing recipes and figure out how to present them
  • planning menus
  • inspecting equipment for cleanliness
  • hiring and training
  • ordering and maintaining an inventory of supplies and ingredients

Salary: As of May 2018 the median annual wage was $48,460. Pay is usually higher in luxurious restaurants and hotels.
